The facts below come from NCFE’s qualification specification (version 1.3, November 2025).
What is the NCFE Level 1/2 Technical Award in Business and Enterprise?
It is a vocational qualification with the Ofqual qualification number 603/7004/X, designed for learners aged 14 to 16 in schools and colleges and also accessible post-16. NCFE gives it 143 guided learning hours and a total qualification time of 157 hours, and describes it as equivalent to GCSE grades 8.5 to 1. The qualification consists of 8 content areas.
How is the qualification assessed?
There are two externally set assessments. The non-exam assessment (NEA) is a synoptic project worth 120 marks and 60% of the qualification; centres mark it and NCFE moderates it, and the completion time is 21 hours. The examined assessment is an externally set, externally marked written exam worth 80 marks and 40%, lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. The two marks combine to give a total out of 200.
What grades can you get, and how are they decided?
The grades available are level 1 pass, merit and distinction, and level 2 pass, merit, distinction and distinction*. The qualification is linear, so both assessments must be taken in the same series, and NCFE sets the grade boundaries for each series. A learner without enough marks for a level 1 pass is awarded unclassified (U).
